Star Trek Deep Space Nine was a TV series which premiered in 1993 and ran for seven straight seasons ending in 1999. The series was very different than the original Star Trek in that it was focused on the adventures of characters based on a far off space station instead of on a star ship.

It focuses on a formerly Cardassian space station called Terok Nor. Following the liberation of the Bajorans from a long and often brutal occupation of their planet by the Cardassians, the provisional Bajoran government invited the United Federation of Planets to establish joint control of the station and rename it Deep Space Nine.

The station was relocated near a newly discovered Bajoran wormhole which enabled access to distant worlds in the largely unexplored Gamma Quadrant. This caused the station to become an important center for exploration, trade and commerce, and sometimes open conflict.

The cast of characters in this show is very interesting and noteworthy. The Benjamin Sisko character played by Avery Brooks is the commander of the station. He is assisted by Kiera Nerys, a Bajoran who serves as First Officer. Kiera was a guerilla fighter during the Cardassian occupation of Bajoran. She has a strong hatred for the Cardassians and is involved in a number of conflicts with them throughout the show.

Rene Oberjonois plays Odo, the Chief of Security. He is a changeling which allows him to assume any shape he desires.

The show was well received by critics and was noted for its fine acting. The series won several important awards including a nomination for an Emmy Award every year of its nine year run. The categories for nomination included makeup, cinematography, art direction, special effects, music and costumes.

Star Trek Deep Space Nine was also nominated for two Hugo Awards for the best dramatic presentation. However a similar and competing show called Babylon 5 won the award instead. Nevertheless this show was certainly a noteworthy addition to the Star Trek TV show legacy.
